Medicinal uses:

Roots are used as substitute for sarsaparill, They are demulcent, alterative, diaphoretic, diuretic, tonic. Plant is used in loss of appetite, disinclination for food, fever, skindiseases, as blood purifier in leucorrhoea, syphilis, rheumatism and in scorpion-sting and snake-bite.

Air dried roots contain 0.22% essential oil containing 0.18% 2-hydroxy-4methoxy benzaldehyde, sterols and a glucoside.
